But the wily old McMullen also added that one needed only to make one superb deal in a lifetime, and he wisely conceded that Steinbrenner had made a spectacular deal when he and his partners bought the Yankees from CBS for slightly less than $10 million. Steinbrenner led a full, successful and often troubled life, and yet his death removes a powerful force from the baseball business and an often loud and troublesome personality
from the public scene.

I knew him well. He left baseball under pressure from me in 1990 and was out for two years. Then he begged me to let him back into our game, and I did so because I thought he had made a silly deal for himself when he had asked me to let him leave baseball for life after having engaged in a vicious effort to discredit the Yankee player, David Winfield. This is not the place to revisit all that drama, but I let him back because I thought then and still believe he did not deserve to be banned for life.

Cliff Lee was traded around enough now to browsers to whether they were properly remunerated for their services.Unfortunately, the last two clubs to trade for the former Cy Young winner, the course of young players who started on the return has not yet had a major impact in all cases. While the predecessor companies obviously can not be regarded as failures, especially for the Phillies, it seems Seattle may have finally settled with the Rangers. With a package centered around highly touted young first baseman Justin Smoak, Seattle got the big league-ready impact player that was lacking in the last two deals. And the supporting cast of young players also involved in the deal could pay off for Seattle as well.

July 29, 2009: Indians Trade Lee to Phillies

If we're going to rank the best and worst deals for Cliff Lee's services, you have to point to the Cleveland Indians as the team that got the worst end of the stick. While it's too early to judge Jason Knapp, who has been injured, the rest of the players involved have not met expectations. Lou Marson has struggled at the big league level, and Carlos Carrasco doesn't look like the top-of-the-rotation starter Cleveland expected, or for that matter like a middle-of-the-rotation starter either. In fact, it may turn out that the best piece of the deal for Cleveland could be Jason Donald. Donald has the look of a steady big leaguer, but may not be an everyday middle infielder.
Essentially, the only hope for the deal netting them an impact player is Knapp at this point, and given his health that is far from a sure thing.

"The twentieth century was characterized by three projects of great political importance: the growth of democracy, the growth of corporate power and the growth of corporate propaganda as a means of protecting corporate power against democracy.Corporate propaganda directed...to the public at large, has two main objectives: to identify the free-enterprise system in popular consciousness with every cherished value, and to identify interventionist governments and strong unions (the only agencies capable of checking the complete domination of society by the corporations) with tyranny, oppression and even subversion." (1)

"One of the saddest lessons of history is this: If we've been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle. We're no longer interested in finding out the truth. The bamboozle has captured us. It is simply too painful to acknowledge --even to ourselves--that we've been so credulous." (2)People in a group who see themselves as "all in the same boat" tend to cooperate to promote the group's general welfare and invest in the common good to create prosperity for all. That's a social contract. But we're not all in the same boat. A very few of us are on a luxury liner and the rest of us are lucky if we're issued leaky life rafts or tattered life preservers.

Those on the luxury liner encourage groups within the larger group to see themselves as separate, and further, that gains by any one group comes at the expense of the other groups. But this is true only insofar as the group at the top of the economic pyramid, the "opulent minority," is taking from them all. Internal conflicts within the larger group escalate, tearing it apart. Once these splinter groups have done their work for them, (they always have someone to do their work for them), the "opulent minority" comes to feast on the financial remains of the social contract.

With flight reports that Mariners are about to trade Cliff Lee for the Yankees, jump, two questions surface. It would be just a change of uniforms Lee tonight and start against the Mariners, as was already scheduled to play tonight against the Yankees, Phil Hughes at Safeco Field?Jesus Montero, the top prospect in the Yankees' minor-league system, is the big chip being dangled by the Yankees in a potential trade for Cliff Lee.

(Getty Images file photo)And more importantly in the long run for the Mariners, who exactly is Jesus Montero, the 20-year-old prospect expected to come to Seattle in return for Lee?
While there likely will be more than one prospect in a deal -- several reports say second baseman David Adams and right-hander Zach McAllister will be included -- Montero is the legitimate, big-time prospect who would be the key to making any deal happen with the Yankees. For a team crying out for big-time power, it's not hard to understand why the M's would jump at Montero.

He's a big 6-foot-4, 225-pound catcher, though some feel he'll ultimately wind up as a first baseman. For the Mariners, what matters most is the big bat and whether Montero is as good as projected by Baseball America, which rated him the fourth-best prospect in baseball coming into this season behind the impressive threesome of Jason Heyward, Steven Strasburg and Mike Stanton. all making big-league waves already.aMontero isn't there yet. He's currently in Triple-A ball this season and still adjusting to that level, hitting .

PARIS - Police raided the offices of the financial advisor to the richest woman in France on Friday as part of a growing scandal that includes allegations that it illegally gave money to the presidential campaign Nicolas Sarkozy.Three police vans arrived at the headquarters of Patrice de Maistre, Chief Financial Advisor L'Oreal heiress Liliane Bettencourt. They isolate the modern building in the suburb of Paris, Neuilly-sur-Seine where Sarkozy was mayor of the length, and officers came and went.

French authorities are looking into Bettencourt's foreign bank accounts and tax file. Separately, French prosecutors opened a preliminary investigation this week into claims that she secretly gave euro150,000 to Sarkozy's party during his 2007 presidential election campaign. The claims, which are unproven and which Sarkozy denies, are part of a large and growing scandal that has destabilized Sarkozy's conservative government and helped push the president's approval ratings to new lows among French voters squeezed by the global economic crisis.

De Maistre has been at the heart of the affair, which stemmed from an inheritance dispute between Bettencourt and her daughter.De Maistre recently acknowledged that Bettencourt had tens of millions of euros in foreign bank accounts.Sarkozy has sought to crack down on tax havens and wealthy French taxpayers with assets abroad.A preliminary inquiry was opened Friday regarding tape recordings allegedly made by one of Bettencourt's butlers concerning bank accounts in Switzerland, the prosecutor's office said.

All together, Cliff Lee seemed destined to go to the Yankees. Lee, the All-Star left, is eligible for free agency after this season and the Yankees 'budget' deep would give them a big advantage in signing him. But Lee, it turns out, can join the Yankees very soon. The Yankees and the Mariners have made progress toward a Lee trade, according to an official involved in the talks, who added that the final decision is now up to the Mariners. The official was granted anonymity because the deal has not been completed. Joel Sherman of the New York Post broke the story, reporting that the Yankees’ trade package would include catcher Jesus Montero and infielder David Adams.

Lee is scheduled to pitch against the Yankees at Safeco Field on Friday night, so a deal could be finalized quickly. Lee would give the Yankees four All-Stars in their starting rotation, joining C.C. Sabathia, Andy Pettitte and Phil Hughes. It would also free the Yankees to trade another starter – presumably Javier Vazquez – for offense or bullpen help before the July 31 nonwaiver trading deadline. Lee, who won the 2008 A.L. Cy Young Award for Cleveland, beat the Yankees twice in the 2009 World Series, when he pitched for Philadelphia, and also won the first game at the new Yankee Stadium last season. He is 8-3 with a 2.34 earned run average this season, with 89 strikeouts and just six walks.
