Memorial Day was also known as "Decoration Day" because of wreaths, flowers and other special symbols left on the graves of soldiers and other womenEven though Memorial Day, as celebrated on the last Monday of May, has been an official federal holiday since 1971, its origins date back to the 1860s, when the tradition of Decoration Day began as a way to honor fallen soldiers.On this special day of remembrance, the sacrifices of those who fought this nation's battles and died are not all a matter of history and the pasToday, men and women in uniform have been fighting and dying overseas in a bloody war against terrorism. The continued fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan is not what many hoped for or expected, and the nation continues to hear doubts about keeping our troops there.While that certainly is a legitimate debate worth having, it is not for todayt tense.The nation's battles continue. The debt we owe to those who fight those battles remain.Today we honor the soldiers and sailors who have died there and in wars of the past. We honor their sacrifice and willingness to risk their own lives in pursuit of the ideals of this nation.
