Juno Beach, Florida, phony - Marine Life Center, said she accepts that it is a turtle that a flipper amputated after release from a boat near Port Everglades Power Plant taken in October 200The loggerhead sea turtle, named Gilda by Loggerhead's staff, had undergone surgery and more than a year of physical therapy leading up to her release. Doctors said she was critically injured by boat propeller strikes.8"She has had a very lengthy recuperation with numerous complications," said Dr. Nancy Mettee. "It is my medical opinion and that of my colleague, Dr. Mike Walsh at Clearwater Marine Aquarium, that Gilda has shown sufficient strength and hunting skills that she can now survive on her own in the wild,"Officials said Gilda is a 1 in 1,000 turtle because only .1 percent of loggerhead sea turtle hatchlings survive to adulthood.Marine officials said nesting season began in April for loggerheads and that Gilda has the best chance for successful mating the sooner she returns to the ocean.Gilda will be released between 6 and 7 p.m. on Wednesday on the beach behind the Loggerhead Marine Life Center. Spectators are asked to go directly to the beach to see the release.
